Where does the money go?
Miles For Hope is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that raises funds for Brain Cancer Research. Miles For Hope is entirely volunteer based, therefore the money raised is used for its intended purpose.
Miles For Hope was been founded by Barb and Bob Gibbs to fund brain tumor clinical trials and to provide travel assistance to brain tumor patients enrolled in brain tumor clinical trials. We are located in Clearwater Florida.
Brain Tumors are the #1 killer of children under the age of 20. Each year more than 200,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor. Primary brain tumors comprise approximately 40,000 of these diagnoses. Please visit our “Brain Tumor Information” page for additional information. Currently there is no cure for Brain Tumors. Our goal is to give hope to others who otherwise have no hope that are living with a terminal disease.
This cause hits very close to home for Miles For Hope. Bob was diagnosed with a primary brain tumor on May 16, 2004. For the past 4 years, given the low grade of his tumor, the only hope we had was that his tumor would not grow or become more aggressive. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Over the past four years, he has undergone two brain surgeries and chemotherapy. During his last surgery on May 15, 2008, we were told that his tumor has become more aggressive and is now a Grade III. This has decreased his chances of survival. However, now that the tumor is more aggressive, this has qualified him for a Brain Tumor Vaccine Trial at UCLA Medical Center. This trial is showing great promise and may be the answer that the Brain Tumor community has been waiting for.
It has been our belief since his initial diagnoses that if brain tumors can be treated while still a lower grade cancer, this should increase the patients chance of survival. It is our current goal to raise enough funds to expand the current clinical trial he is on to include Grade II Brain Tumors and Pediatric Brain Tumor Patients. Thus giving them the hope we have not had for the past 4 years. Living with a terminal disease day by day brings its own trials and tribulations. But when you add no hope this makes the disease that much worse. It is our goal to give this hope to others.
